Statewide Distance Learning Program
Teacher candidates in the statewide distance education program take classes together for five semesters, including one summer. To prepare for being a distance learner, teacher candidates enroll in an dattend a technology intensive weekend course held on the UH-Manoa campus during the month of July before the beginning of fall semester. Statewide teacher candidates attend the New Student Orientation in August during the first session of fall semester.
Courses are offered in a hybrid format, combining web-based and face-to-face instruction on designated weekends. The Office of Technology and Distance Education provides student stipends to assist with the cost of airfare and lodging when teacher candidates travel to Oahu for face-to-face meetings.
Statewide teacher candidates follow the same schedule and complete the same requirements as O‘ahu candidates for field experience and student teaching. Statewide teacher candidates meet for field experience seminars according to the schedule specified on their home island.
The EECE Statewide Program Coordinator on O‘ahu, provides leadership for the distance education program on all neighbor islands. Teacher candidates also work closely with the coordinators and field supervisors who live on their home islands.
