Passing the PRAXIS Content Knowledge Exam(s)
The Hawaii Teacher Standards Board (HTSB) now requires all teacher candidates in State Approved Teacher Education Programs (SATEPS) to pass the Praxis II content knowledge exam(s) before they can advance to student teaching in semester IV. Students in a dual preparation program must pass the content knowledge exams in both areas of study (K-6 Elementary and SPED or K-6 Elementary and Early Childhood Education). This is an HTSB policy, and the College of Education (COE) cannot waive or substitute this requirement.
Your methods courses are not designed to prepare you for this exam. Candidates are strongly encouraged to study for the Praxis II exam(s) and to take it early in the program in order to have ample time to take it again, if needed. Information about the Praxis II exams, including costs, dates, and exam preparation materials, can be found at http://www.ets.org/praxis. The Hawaii Department of Education also offers an on-line PLATO Praxis Prep course for a minimal charge. Speak to an OSAS advisor for information about this course.
