Semester IV
During the fourth semester (student teaching), teacher candidates attend school every day, all day, just as their mentor teachers do. The attendance policy is provided on this website under EECE Program/Four Semesters of the Program/ Semester 1. Mentor teachers, field supervisors, and student teachers devise a written schedule for the semester, with student teachers gradually assuming responsibility for whole-day teaching, leading to a three-week solo teaching period (four weeks for dual preparation). The three solo weeks can be consecutive or spread over time in the semester. Mentor teachers plan and co-teach with student teachers to help them transition into and from the solo period. Many student teachers teach a solo week and then spend the next week(s) in reflection and planning before teaching the next part of their solo. The Student Teaching section of this site contains an example semester schedule and Expectations for Student Teaching.
Mentor teachers leave the classroom for short and then longer periods of time during student teaching. Teacher candidates should always know how to reach their mentors when they are out of the classroom. If mentors are off campus, a substitute teacher must be present in the classroom for legal purposes. During the solo period, mentors leave student teachers in charge of the classroom for entire days at a time. However, mentors must spend time observing and assessing student teachers during the solo period in order to complete evaluation forms and recommend teacher candidates for program completion.
Teacher candidates are responsible for scheduling the mid- and end-of-semester student teaching evaluation conferences with their mentor teacher. Field supervisors attend the end-of semester conference. All parties must sign the final evaluation forms, which go into graduates’ EECE and OSAS files. Cohort coordinators collect and turn in the forms.
Student teachers submit assignments for the EECE assessment system to complete program requirements. In addition, teacher candidates submit their final Professional Teaching Portfolio for evaluation as a graduation requirement.
