Semester III
During the third semester, teacher candidates take methods courses and field experience. All coursework must be completed by the end of semester III, and official scores for the Praxis II content knowledge exam(s) must be submitted to UHM in order to advance to student teaching. Teacher candidates who have remaining coursework or have not attempted the Praxis II test must delay student teaching to fulfill their requirements. Teacher candidates should make an appointment with their OSAS advisor to complete a Student Teaching Application early in the semester, if they have not already done so.
In semester III, teacher candidates often, although not always, are assigned field experience in the classroom where they will student teach, allowing them to work with the same mentor teacher and group of students for the entire year. By the end of the third semester, teacher candidates should be able to plan, teach, and assess at least one entire day of instruction without mentor teachers’ assistance. Teacher candidates must submit written lesson plans in advance before they teach, with deadlines determined by the mentor teacher and field supervisors. Mentor teachers, field supervisors, and teacher candidates meet to make the decision on whether teacher candidates advance to student teaching. Teacher candidates present and display their portfolios during field seminars. They also submit assignments for the EECE assessment system during this semester.
