Overview of Student Teaching
Student teaching at last! This section is designed to help answer questions and provide guidance for the final semester. Teacher candidates should remember to seek assistance and support at any point from cohort coordinators, field supervisors, course instructors, mentor teachers, school administrators, fellow cohort students, OSAS advisors, placement coordinator, secretaries, and the department chair. Above all, student teachers should ask for help right away when they need it.
Important Dates
Teacher candidates must submit a formal application for student teaching. Forms are available from the Office of Student Academic Services (OSAS). Students must have an OSAS Advisor approve the application, which OSAS forwards to EECE. Application deadlines are as follows:
August 15 - September 15 to student teach in spring semester
January 15 - February 15 to student teach in fall semester
Student teaching officially begins with and follows the UHM calendar. However, student teachers are strongly advised to contact their mentor teachers to assist with preparation for the opening days of school. Student teachers who plan to begin before or continue beyond the UHM semester must obtain signed permission from the principal to serve as a school volunteer.
Attendance Policy
Student teachers are expected to be in their field placements Monday through Friday for the entire semester. Be on time, sign in/out at the office, and remain at your placement for the entire day. Maintain teacher hours, which for DOE teachers extend from at least 7:45 a.m. until 2:45 p.m. each day. Student teaching includes all professional development (PD) days, planning/collaboration days, teacher work days, Teacher Institute Day, faculty meetings, IEP meetings, etc., that take place during the semester. In addition, student teachers are highly encouraged to participate in other school-based activities that may extend beyond normal hours, such as school-community events and meetings, extended field trips, parent/student conferences, and professional meetings, conferences and workshops, which often are held on weekends.
Seminar
Student teachers register for seminar as a separate required course that meets throughout the semester on a regular basis. Cohort coordinators work with student teachers to set the schedule and topics for seminar. Seminar attendance is mandatory.
Seminar meetings are held for each cohort at partner schools, the UHM campus, or other designated locations. Student teachers also meet as a large group with the Hawai‘i Teacher Standards Board, DOE Personnel Office, and Hawai‘i State Teachers Association for information on licensing, hiring, and union support.
Student teachers can think of seminars as faculty meetings for their cohort. Seminars provide a great opportunity for student teachers, cohort coordinators, and field supervisors to discuss important issues that arise throughout the semester.
Student teachers take responsibility for planning and leading some of the seminar sessions, including arrangements for guest speakers. Seminars provide time to finalize Professional Teaching Portfolios, prepare required work for EECE assessment submission, submit applications for employment, and participate in practice interviews. The same attendance policy, including notification of cohort coordinators and field supervisors in case of absence, applies to the student teaching seminar.
Placements
O‘ahu and Statewide Placements
UHM cohort coordinators and field supervisors make all student teaching placements in designated partner schools. Students are not permitted to make their own placements. Placements depend on the availability of qualified mentor teachers and field supervisors, and on students’ academic standing at UHM.
Different Island Placements
Students who wish to go home to student teach can request a placement on a different island by writing a letter to the Elementary Director of the Institute for Teacher Education (Everly Hall 222) in the semester preceding student teaching. Placements depend on the availability of qualified mentor teachers and field supervisors, and on students’ academic standing at UHM. Written requests are due to the Elementary Director by October 1 for spring semester and March 1 for fall semester.
Out of State Placements
Students can petition to student teach out of state. Written letters of request are due to the Elementary Director (Everly Hall 223) by October 1 for spring semester and March 1 for fall semester. Permission is not automatic and depends upon the student’s statement of need for the placement, availability of qualified mentor teachers and field supervisors in another state, and academic standing at UHM.
