Semester II
During the second semester, teacher candidates continue to take methods courses and field experience. Teacher candidates attend field experience in a different grade level, usually at a different partner school, and take increasing responsibility for classroom management, planning, teaching, and assessment. Teacher candidates submit written lesson plans before the days they teach. By the end of the second semester, teacher candidates should be able to plan, teach, and assess the equivalent of a half-day (morning or afternoon block) of instruction without mentor teachers’ assistance.
Field experience seminars focus on examining classroom experiences and documenting evidence of successful teaching. Teacher candidates assume responsibility for scheduling mid- and end-of-semester conferences with their mentor teacher to assess their progress.
Teacher candidates should provide written evidence of their performance to their mentor teacher before the conference meetings. Field supervisors attend conferences as needed.
Teacher candidates continue to build their Professional Teaching Portfolio by identifying additional exemplars and providing evidence of their knowledge, skills, and dispositions in these areas. Teacher candidates present and display their portfolios during field seminars.
If teacher candidates have not already done so, they should study for, register and take the Praxis II content knowledge exam(s) (www.ets.org/praxis). Dual preparation students must take the Elementary Education exam and the Special Education or the Early Childhood exam. The exam(s) must be passed prior to student teaching in semester 4. You can find preparation materials in the Wist Hall College Collaboration Center (CCC) and the Educational Testing Service website (www.ets.org/). The Hawaii DOE also offers an inexpensive Plato Praxis Preparation on-line course http://doe.k12.hi.us). For more information, speak with an OSAS advisor or visit the Hawai‘i Teacher Standards Board website (www.htsb.org).
Completion of spring semester marks the end of year one in the program and is a major transition point for teacher candidates. After spring grades are posted, teacher candidates need to make an appointment with their OSAS advisor for a graduation check. Teacher candidates also complete their Student Teaching Application, open their OSAS Placement File, and apply for graduation during this appointment.
