Dual Preparation in Elementary and Early Childhood Education
Teacher candidates in the Elementary and Early Childhood Education dual preparation program complete an additional 18-21 credits in Early Childhood Education (ECE). The required ECE courses follow:
FAMR 331 Infancy and Early Childhood 3 credits
FAMR 332 Childhood 3 credits
ITE 417 Developmentally Appropriate Practice 3 credits
ITE 415/415L Early Childhood: Foundations and Curriculum + Lab (pre-requisite: FAMR 331) 6 credits
ITE 425 Family and Community Centered Programs 3 credits
ITE 416/416L Early Childhood: Foundations and Curriculum + Lab (pre-requisite: FAMR 332) 6 credits
The ECE coursework in the Elementary/ECE dual preparation program is not block-scheduled, therefore it is essential to plan with OSAS advisors and ECE faculty to schedule coursework prior to entering the program. Because of the heavier course load, teacher candidates need to take their four Elementary Education Emphasis courses (EDEF 310, EDEP 311, ITE/EDEF 360, and Performing Arts/Creative Movement elective) before beginning the cohort program. In addition, teacher candidates must complete as many of the ECE classes as possible (except 416/416L) before entering the COE.
Elementary/ECE teacher candidates have field experience in preschool, K-3, and upper elementary placements. When ITE 415 and 416 are taken while in the cohort program, the corresponding labs (415L & 416L) replace ITE 317 Field Experience. ECE teacher candidates student teach in K-3 classrooms, where they complete at least three weeks of solo teaching (consecutive weeks or spread across the semester).
The ECE emphasis has been an important part of the Elementary and Early Childhood Education program for many years.
