ASSESSMENTS
Student teachers must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to become knowledgeable, effective, and caring new teachers. In short, student teachers must show that they are ready to become new teachers in their own classrooms. The following assessments are required to complete student teaching.
Final Professional Teaching Portfolio
Student teachers work with their cohort coordinator and field supervisor to complete their final portfolio to meet the expectations provided in the appendix. Student teachers present their portfolios to their colleagues during seminar sessions. In addition, cohort coordinators can assist student teachers in preparing an Interview Portfolio—a streamlined version—to use during job interviews with school principals.
Conferences and Evaluations
Forms for evaluation of student teaching are on the COE Student Wiki. Student teachers are evaluated at mid-semester and the end-of-the semester on the Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI) standards (linked to the10 InTASC standards as of July 1, 2013) and the EECE Professional Dispositions at the end of the semester. Student teachers are responsible for scheduling mid-and end-of-semester conferences with their mentor teacher. Field supervisors attend the end-of-semester conference, and all individuals must sign the evaluation forms. Field supervisors and cohort coordinators deliver evaluation forms to the EECE department. Student teachers must score meets or exceeds in all categories on the end-of-semester evaluations to pass student teaching.
ITE 390 (Student Teaching) and ITE 391 (Seminar in Student Teaching) are co-requisites courses. The UHM field supervisor assigns a grade of Credit or No Credit for student teaching and a separate grade for seminar. Student teachers must pass both courses to pass student teaching. If a student teacher receives a grade of No Credit in either ITE 390 or ITE 391, the student fails both student teaching and seminar. Thus, if a student teacher repeats student teaching, the seminar also must be repeated.
