Expectations for Reflective Practice
Teacher candidates learn to demonstrate their professional growth through an array of reflective practices. Candidates continually evaluate the effects of their choices and actions in all aspects of their work. Reflective strategies that teacher candidates use include:
1. Linking professional readings and coursework to classroom practice.
2. Making entries into reflective journals or logs.
3. Writing and discussing commentary on planning, teaching, and assessment.
4. Receiving and sharing feedback from peers, instructors, and mentor teachers.
5. Reflecting on lesson plans.
6. Deciding on next steps.
7. Preparing professional portfolio entries and reflections.
8. Participating in self-assessments and conferences related to the Hawai‘i Teacher Performance Standards, the Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI) Standards, and the EECE Professional Dispositions.
Instructors provide detailed syllabi to explain expectations for each professional core course. Syllabi also are posted on the student wiki. Teacher candidates are responsible for knowing and meeting all expectations and deadlines. Daily and punctual attendance is required throughout the EECE program.
Teacher candidates document their professional growth by demonstrating their knowledge, skills, and dispositions to show that they are knowledgeable, effective, and caring teachers through a range of assessments in the EECE program. Teacher candidates also develop a Professional Teaching Portfolio.
