Lesson Planning
Teacher candidates learn to use the EECE lesson planning format for developing lessons and units in the cohort program. Teacher candidates will find that instructors require variations in detail in the lesson plan. However, candidates should recognize that the basic lesson plan format remains the same.
The EECE lesson plan requires teacher candidates to think like an assessor. That is, candidates must decide how they will assess students’ learning (performance task and criteria) before they design their learning plan (lesson activities). During the EECE program, teacher candidates will become familiar with many approaches to authentic assessment—that is, assessment that connects with children’s experiences.
Teacher candidates demonstrate their plans by submitting lessons and units in advance of the day they plan to teach--no plans, no teaching. Mentor teachers and field supervisors can provide feedback when they have the opportunity to review lesson plans in advance. In addition, mentor teachers need to know what candidates intend to do in their classroom.
